Get to know Kathy

The best advice Kathy has ever been given is the graphic ‘Iceberg Illusion of Success.’ It is a graphic that displays success as an iceberg—what people see is just the small portion above the water level—your success. What people don’t see is everything that has gone into achieving that success—persistence, failure, sacrifice, and more.

If she wasn’t an accountant, Kathy would explore criminal psychology. She has always been fascinated with certain aspects of human nature, such as public image presented versus reality and what causes people to choose to engage in criminal activities.

Three items on Kathy’s buck list are learning to play the piano, going on an African photo safari, and writing a screenplay.

Kathy’s analytical mind makes accounting a great fit for her. Her personal philosophy of service is simple: “Clients don’t need to pay us to prepare their tax returns inaccurately—they can do that for free on their own.” With over two decades of experience in the accounting field, Kathy is a valuable member of the HeimLantz team. Prior to joining the firm, she spent 17 years with a Delaware accounting firm, starting as a staff accountant in 2001 and ending as the firm’s managing partner. Upon moving to Michigan in 2019, she worked as an income tax manager with a large regional firm for two years before joining HeimLantz in 2021. Kathy attributes her career success to the belief that she can achieve whatever she sets her mind to and the conviction that she should do her best at everything that she attempts, simply as a matter of pride.

Kathy has developed advanced expertise in the areas of small business and individual income taxation. In her capacity as the firm’s Skills Development Coordinator, Kathy is responsible for the development and implementation of training programs for the tax team including a broad range of in-house CPE presentations. She is especially dedicated to being a resource for our entry level tax team members and providing them with the tools and feedback that they need to swiftly progress. Her training process emphasizes mastering software mechanics, research, and critical thinking skills as well as theory, gained in large part from real-world examples. Kathy also reviews personal and business tax returns.

Raised in a suburb of Buffalo, New York, Kathy learned a lot from spending time with her father, who was a self-employed home builder and general contractor who also acted as his own realtor and bookkeeper. He took her to work with him and taught her about business practices, negotiating, sales, and many other facets of being a successful entrepreneur. She spent time living in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Germany, New Mexico, Maryland, and Delaware before settling down in her current location—southwest Michigan. She enjoys living in Hudsonville with her husband of more than 20 years and their two pets, a dog and a cat. In her free time, Kathy pursues a variety of hobbies, including birding, bicycle riding, hydroponic vegetable gardening, cryptocurrency, and criminal justice system reform.
