HeimLantz CPAs and Advisors Welcomes Daniel Russell to Ownership Group

HeimLantz CPAs and Advisors proudly announces the addition of Daniel T. Russell, CPA.ABV.CFF, CVA, CFE, MSA to the firm’s ownership group.

“As a person of color, I am extremely proud to now be in this leadership position,” said Russell. “One of our firm’s core values is Innovate to Differentiate and I see myself as an example of that core value in action. HeimLantz does not do things similar to other firms. We have created a culture that sets us apart. With that in mind, I hope to continue to create exciting opportunities for our team members and our clients. I want the people I work with to be valued as the uniquely talented individuals they are and to feel safe and financially secure while doing so.”

“It is first and foremost an exciting day at HeimLantz to have Dan join the ownership group,” said Tommy Lantz, CEO. “I am excited for him and his family, and—more importantly—for the firm, our team members, and our clients. Dan brings invaluable strategic and leadership skills that will continue to foster a culture of inclusion, change, and innovation at HeimLantz.”

Though not originally an accountant by trade, Russell came into the profession in 2011. Prior to his start in the accounting department for a small marketing firm, he was a middle school math and writing teacher and a high school basketball coach.

Russell joined HeimLantz in 2013 as a staff accountant. Russell is currently the firm’s Consulting Business Unit Leader and the firm’s first ever Director of Business Development. The rapidity of Russell’s career advancement—less than nine years—is rare for an accounting professional and even rarer for a person of color. According to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), fewer than one percent (1%) of the approximately 660,000 CPAs in the United States are black—with even fewer serving as owners at accounting firms.

Russell earned his undergraduate degree—a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Mathematics—from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. He went on to study at the University of Baltimore, earning a Master of Science degree in Accounting in 2013. He became licensed as a CPA in Maryland in 2014 and obtained four additional certifications over the next 36 months. Russell is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA), the National Association of Certified Value Analysts (NACVA), and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). Born in Washington, D.C., Russell currently lives in Annapolis, Maryland, with his wife and their three children.

“The future is very bright at HeimLantz,” said Russell. “This firm is one of a kind. You do not have to follow the normal path to success. You can create your own path. We cultivate individuality, and I look forward to helping grow the firm with that in mind. I am also grateful for the trust imparted on me by our team and by the ownership group.”
